The BIS established its Representative Office for the Americas in Mexico City in November 2002.

The Office’s main areas of activity are related to Latin America and the Caribbean and include:

strengthening the relations of the BIS with, and promoting cooperation among, central banks and supervisory authorities and other relevant institutions in the region; cooperating closely with regional organisations (eg CEMLA, ASBA, CMCA, FLAR) in the pursuit of its goals; research on regional financial market issues and related monetary policy or financial stability issues; facilitating the organisation of meetings Publications and research

Publications authored or co-authored by Americas Office staff are made available on the Bank’s website.

Selected BIS publications are available in Spanish. This includes regular publications such as the BIS Annual Report and Quarterly Review, as well as some press releases, speeches and committee publications. You can go to the list of Spanish translations, or select "Spanish content" while performing an advanced search on the BIS website.

Consultative Council for the Americas

The Office provides the Secretariat to the Consultative Council for the Americas (CCA). The CCA, which comprises the Governors of the BIS member central banks in the Americas, was established in May 2008 as an advisory committee to the BIS Board of Directors. It is currently chaired by José Darío Uribe, Governor, Bank of the Republic, Colombia.

Under the auspices of the CCA, the BIS Representative Office for the Americas supports central bank consultations in key areas (operations, financial stability). It also organises an annual research conference of central banks, and has initiated research network projects implementing collaborative research on themes of interest to central banks (eg the effects of foreign exchange market intervention, introducing financial stability considerations in central bank policy models).
